Treatment of keratoconus (cross-linking) in Grodno

Treatment of keratoconus with cross-linking strengthens the cornea and prevents progression of the disease. The procedure involves applying riboflavin and exposure to ultraviolet light, which increases the strength of the tissue. A safe and effective method that helps preserve vision and improve its quality.

    Keratoconus and crosslinking

    The eye of a healthy person has the shape of a sphere. However, due to degenerative processes in the cornea, the cornea becomes thinner and takes on a conical shape. This disease is medically called keratoconus.

    Crosslinking is a modern minimally invasive method used in ophthalmology for the treatment of keratoconus, as well as some other diseases (for example, corneal dystrophies). By simultaneously instilling riboflavin (vitamin B2) and using a special device, the cornea is strengthened and keratoconus is stabilized.

    Symptoms of keratoconus

    Since the cornea acquires a cone-shaped shape due to the development of keratoconus, visual acuity decreases due to uneven refraction of light rays, a person begins to see objects distorted (as in myopia), and lines become curved (as in astigmatism). With progressive keratoconus, a person experiences difficulties in selecting optical correction devices. The process of thinning the cornea occurs already in advanced stages of keratoconus. Without treatment, keratoconus can lead to vision loss.

    CROSS-LINKING PROCESS:

    The VOKA eye microsurgery center uses a modern and effective method of treating keratoconus - cross-linking. First, the surface epithelium of the cornea is removed, then a riboflavin solution is instilled and exposure to ultraviolet light is carried out. This process helps strengthen the cornea and increase its resistance to deformation.

    CONTRAINDICATIONS TO CROSS-LINKING

      • The procedure is not performed on patients under the age of majority;
      • The procedure is not performed if the cornea thickness is insufficient (less than 400 microns);
      • The procedure is not performed for inflammatory eye diseases;
      • The procedure is not performed for general diseases (contraindications from the cardiovascular or respiratory system).

    TREATMENT RESULT

    Due to the cross-linking procedure, the following improvements occur:

      • the corneal stroma is strengthened;
      • thinning of the cornea stops;
      • visual characteristics improve;
      • the progression of keratoconus is stabilized.
