Pterygium is a common disease of the conjunctiva (otherwise known as “pterygoid hymen”). Pterygium is characterized by the growth of the conjunctiva onto the surface of the cornea of the inner corner of the eye. The pterygium “advances” to the pupil and this leads not only to a cosmetic defect, but also noticeably reduces vision. People of any age are susceptible to this disease.
Among the factors that provoke the development of pterygium, the following are noted:
Diagnosis of this disease is not difficult. Often, patients themselves discover the growth of the conjunctiva on the cornea. During the examination, the ophthalmologist uses microscopic technology and accurately determines the essence of the disease.

For minor relapses of pterygium, anti-inflammatory treatment can be used. When a “pterygoid hymen” forms, surgical treatment is indicated.
At the first unpleasant sensation in the eye, the patient is recommended to consult an ophthalmologist. An ophthalmologist at the VOKA Eye Microsurgery Center will make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe the optimal course of treatment.
