    Dry eye syndrome

    Dry eye syndrome is a decrease or loss of the eye's natural tear production. In recent years, dry eye syndrome has become increasingly important. This disease affects 5-9% of the population. Over the past decades, the frequency of this disease has increased 4.5 times. In our country, the prevalence of this syndrome is 2% (in people over 40 years old - 14.4%, over 65 - 17.3%).

    Currently, a number of eye diseases have been identified that have a close connection with dry eye syndrome: chronic conjunctivitis, blepharitis, keratopathy after adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis, secondary corneal dystrophy, pterygium, mechanical injuries (including after surgery), transient dry eye syndrome caused by wearing soft contact lenses lenses, burn disease of the eye, lagophthalmos of various etiologies, autoimmune and thyrotoxic ophthalmopathy, Sjögren's, Stevens-Johnson syndromes, Becher's glands dysfunction of menopausal origin, conjunctival pemphigus and other diseases.

    Causes of dry eye syndrome

    The increase in the prevalence of dry eye syndrome in recent years is associated with the widespread use of computer monitor systems, air conditioners and other office equipment. Environmental pollution in megacities - smoke, smog, chemical fumes - plays a significant role in this disease. The occurrence of this syndrome may be influenced by taking certain medications, including: blockers, antidepressants, antiarrhythmics, oral contraceptives, antihistamines and drugs for the treatment of gastric ulcers.

    General diseases of the body, including collagenosis, rheumatoid arthritis, endocrine dysfunction, diseases of the kidneys, skin and mucous membranes, fasting and deficiency of ascorbic acid and vitamin B12, also contribute to the occurrence of dry eye syndrome. That is why it is necessary to begin treatment of dry eye syndrome by determining the causes of its occurrence.

    Symptoms of dry eye syndrome:

    • redness of the eyes;
    • eye irritation;
    • burning in the eyes;
    • stabbing pain in eyes.

    Treatment of dry eye syndrome

    Conservative treatment of dry eye:

    • use of artificial tear substitutes (drops, gels, ointments);
    • metabolic therapy (stimulates repair of the corneal and conjunctival epithelium);
    • antiallergic therapy;
    • normalization of the immune status of the body and the organ of vision;
    • treatment of concomitant ocular pathologies;
    • treatment of common diseases.

    Surgical treatment of “Dry Eye”:
    Consists of obturation (blocking) of the inferior lacrimal punctum to reduce the outflow of tears from the conjunctival cavity. This treatment of dry eye syndrome is more physiological compared to medication, as it allows you to preserve and use your own tear, unique in composition, and not its artificial substitutes.
